For those unfamiliar with offshore drilling operations, barite—barium sulfate in powdered form—is the literal weight that keeps catastrophic blowouts from happening. Mixed into drilling mud, it creates the hydrostatic pressure that prevents methane and other formation gases from racing up the drill pipe. The Deepwater Horizon disaster in 2010 was a stark reminder of what happens when that pressure balance fails. And if anyone was injured—even minor injuries—you're looking at incident investigations, potential OSHA involvement, increased insurance premiums, and the very real possibility of being barred from future contracts with that operator.

This is what "fast" engineering looks like when it goes wrong. And the insidious thing about it is that it usually doesn't go wrong. You can push the pressure a bit, force material through questionable hoses, skip the protocol steps, and nine times out of ten, you get away with it. You save time, you look like a hero, you beat the schedule.

But that tenth time—that's when you learn what technical debt really means.

Six Weeks for a Connector

Now let's revisit that aerospace connector change with fresh eyes.

That D-sub connector is on a test fixture for a GPS satellite payload. The satellite costs $150 million. The launch costs another $100 million. The mission lifetime is 15 years. And if that satellite fails to achieve orbit, fails to deploy properly, or fails in operation, you don't get a do-over. There's no pulling over to the side of the road, no emergency repair crew, no warranty service.

That connector carries signals that verify payload performance during environmental testing. If the connector introduces noise, intermittent contact, or impedance changes, you might pass testing with a flawed system. That flaw makes it to orbit. The engineering change process isn't bureaucracy for its own sake—it's exactly what Garcia was doing when he shut down that barite transfer. Technical debt is a term borrowed from software development, but it applies universally to any engineering endeavor. Every time you take a shortcut, skip a verification step, defer documentation, or push systems beyond their designed limits "just this once," you're borrowing from your future self. And like financial debt, it compounds.

That barite transfer hose? If we'd pushed through that blockage and gotten away with it, we would have been more likely to try it again the next time. Each successful violation of protocol reinforces the idea that the protocol is optional, that the risk is theoretical, that we're skilled enough to handle the edge cases. Lessons for Program Managers

The key is being honest about which is which.

A prototype in a controlled lab environment might benefit from rapid iteration with minimal process. A flight-critical system needs the six-week connector change procedure. The failure mode of a program manager is believing that all work falls into the same category.

Second, invest in capability before speed. Garcia's crew could move fast because they'd invested thousands of hours in developing competency.
